General Therapy Approach

Helping people through counseling is a privilege and honor for me.  Of high importance to me is creating a safe and caring space for my clients to open up about their concerns.  I approach each person with personal authenticity. I want to be a non-judgmental, warm, compassion, caring, and empathetic person who is fully present with each client. I begin and end the entire counseling experience with grace. Each person is worthy of unconditional love and acceptance. I recognize that each person is broken in ways that are unique to them but also similar to others.  I desire to walk alongside of my client’s journey as we collaborate on the pursuit of freedom, healing, and transformation.

I call my approach to counseling as “Transformational Counseling,” because the need for many people is for those interested in specific details about my approach, my conceptualization of human functioning involves Bowen’s family systems approach as foundational to understanding that each person is a composition of at least three generations of family dynamics. Incorporated in Bowen’s model is the research and applications of attachment theory. Our attachment experiences play an integral role in the development of our brains. I know that one size counseling approach does not fit all. I tailor my approach to each person since we have different life experiences and are complex, I draw from and knowingly weave in other therapy approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing [EMDR], Cognitive Behavioral Therapy [CBT] Acceptance and Commitment Therapy [ACT], Experiential and creative therapies, Adlerian Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Carnes’ Sexual Tasks Model, and Psychodynamic Therapy. I also make use of current neuroscience concepts such as polyvagal theory and interpersonal neurobiology provide, and the role of the body [somatic work] are highly useful and effective in helping people find healing. Of utmost importance, is that I acknowledge that we are three dimensional beings [Body, Soul, Spirit], made in the image of God. Thus, we have incredible dignity.

Solomon penned great wisdom when he wrote, “Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out” [Prov. 20:5]. My job is to help draw the deep parts of the heart.
